Why are the frequency of droughts increasing?

Climate change. The warming of the planet results in extremity of weather conditions, causing long periods without precipitation in many regions (even if the place receives relatively more rainfall) and floods in others. Already dry areas will expand even further. Scientists expect the amount of land affected by drought to grow by mid-century, and water resources in affected areas to decline as much as 30 percent. Severe heatwaves are taking over the planet, with most places experiencing heatwaves and record-high temperatures. We can already see global warming's effects in wildfires, melting ice caps, floods and droughts, but the worst is yet to come. We have to act before Earth too hot for human and animal survival.

How can we stop climate change?

Climate change is already an ongoing problem, but if we come together, we can lessen its effects. We need to act now to save our planet. Visit The EcoClub United's personal guidelines to reduce your contribution to global warming here.

How can we help severely drought-effected places?

  • Donate to NGOs and organisations helping drought-affected areas to fund food kits, water tankers, and family aid packages. You can always perform a quick search to find genuine organisations. Once you've donated to them, spread the word so you can help the drought victims. Time is of the essence.

  • If you're anywhere close to a drought-prone area, you can donate water. Fill clean water in large containers and get a group to help deliver them, or deliver them yourself in your vehicle.

  • Make sure farmers get the support they need. Donating water and money to organisations that help farmers can ensure that farmers' livelihoods and the area's nutrition don't get compromised.

  • Fundraise. Can't donate large sums of money yourself? If you’re feeling inspired and want to get other people in your community involved, you could organise your very own fundraising event. You can depend on the ol' reliable bake sales, or go through this list for more fundraising ideas! Get creative and make a difference.

  • Call any friends or family living in drought affected areas. Ask if they're okay and if they need any help. Feeling supported and connected can make a big difference when times are tough.

  • Volunteer your time at organisations. Organisations helping out drought-stricken areas require a lot of manpower. Team up with your friends or family and volunteer some of your free time to lift the community spirit.

  • Spread the word. The more people will know, the more people will help. Share this article to your friends and family and let them know how to make a difference.
